Monday morning must do

Noordermarkt

The Noordermarkt more than a century ago (http://jordanees.blogspot.nl)

Tell me why I do like Mondays. Well, because there are at least two fabulous markets in Amsterdam that are very much worth a visit.  One of them is the Noordermarkt, in the Jordaan area. {The other is the Dappermarkt, see my post Best daily market on March 22}

It is The Spot for fabulous finds if you love to browse vintage stuff. The market is located on the Noordermarkt square, which is actually in the western part of town. The best moment to visit is early Monday mornings, up until about 1 pm.

I hadn’t been there for ages, but when my sister came to visit we went on a mission. She (well, we) l o v e s markets. And it was great, some new some old themes, but a lovely welcoming atmosphere. You can still find a bargain and there are many inspiring items on display. A wonderful way to start the week I’d say 😉

Here is an impression.

The Noordermarket is also a good place for second hand clothes and fashion accessoiries, fabric and haberdashery. There are some interesting food stalls – the Surinam van was packed! with customers – and they do irresistibly good smoothies for only a few euros.

There are also a few designers that sell their own products like Sebastiaan Duong, the man behind Mingface, and Anne van Dijk.

My personal favourite is the African beads stall, run by Birgit Snitker. She travels to West Africa at least once a year to buy and bring back her beautiful merchandise to sell on the market “come rain or shine” she said, with a big smile. She loves her shop and it is clear to see that she has a good hand in picking. You can find beautifully crafted glass beads from Ghana, as well as necklaces from recycled plastic made in Mali, handmade bronze ornaments and other rare glass beads from all over West Africa. The material, the colours and designs, the uniqueness of every one of them, it is pure delight!
