Red shoes tonight

Red shoes go places

Dorothy’s ruby red shoes.

A New Year is just around the corner and somehow the image of red shoes is stuck in my mind.

Red shoes… I have a card hanging over my working desk, the image above.

They are the ruby red shoes of Dorothy, the main character in the The Wizard of Oz, a girl from Kansas who gets lost in a tornado storm. Blown away into a fantasy land called Oz, she meets Glinda the Good Witch of the North who beams the red shoes onto her feet and tells her to follow the Yellow Brick Road in order to find the Wizard of Oz, as he may be able to help here find her way back home. This journey home becomes the weirdest adventure ever {an interesting take on the old Odyssey theme, I think}.

Long story short: The wizard turns out to be a beard behind a curtain who cannot help her, but! it turns out she already has the power to return home. The red slippers have magical powers and all she has to do is tap her heels together three times and think to herself ” …there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home …” Wonderful indeed.

I feel the red shoe is ideal for a night like this: they are in for a party and will always get you home. A good start of the New Year 😉

The shoes are regarded as one of the world’s best-known film props. Five pairs of ruby slippers are known to have been created for the Wizard of Oz. One pair, held by the owner for 48 years was auctioned by Christie’s in 1988 for $165.000. More recently -with the help of Leonardo Di Caprio and Steven Spielberg!- another pair was rescued from auctioning, and is now part of a museum run by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars. They are believed to have been worn by Judy Garland in 1939 and their worth is estimated between $2-$3 million!

I did a quick Google search and yes, red shoes are seen as adventurous… Here’s a selection.
