Design from waste

There is no such thing as waste, and this coffee table is the proof of it. It is the winning design in the tv show ‘Old and New’, (Oud en Nieuw, NPO3) a new televised competition, this time for the creative. A selection of designers, artists and furniture makers have to make a piece of furniture every week, composed with stuff they find in junk yards and second hand shops. Their sketches and final work is judged by two professionals and every week one competitor will be voted out.

The table above is the winner of the first episode. A coffee table made from iron and wood, a top made out of polished triangular panels, which can be turned over, giving the options oak or pine.

Runners up are a coffee table made from polished styrofoam and another made from painted wood cuts.

It is interesting to see the importance of having an eye for raw materials. Seeing the options of a second life. The hand in picking the right objects from the pile and how sometimes it helps being persuasive and let somebody else do it for you. Only an hour to find their materials and two days to build the piece.

In the second episode they had to make a storage cupboard. I loved it, and can’t wait to see the next episode.
