you will l o v e the work of Caroline Harper!
Art director and set dresser by profession –Turner, the film, being one of her projects- Harper was blown away by the art of map making, and inspired by the work of Stephan Walker in particular, when she visited the Magnificent Map exhibition at the British Library in 2011. “It doesn’t happen very often but on seeing his picture, The Island, I felt compelled to put pen to paper and produce my own detailed illustrated maps” she confesses to Charles Huchinson at the York Press. It became the start of her own career as a mapmaker.
Harper has drawn maps of quite a few cities since, but most are of London, her hometown. Two of them – beautifully float framed – decorate the flat I am staying in in London, very close to the place they came to be… as the artist lives downstairs 🙂
Detailed maps from different neighbourhoods of London are available through the website, prices range from 80 to 210 pounds, from just the print to bespoke framed ones, size 50×50 cm.
