This picture is made by my father. It’s the first one he made after he had regained his freedom out of a Japanese prisoner’s camp. He was forced to work on the construction site of the Palembang Railway track from Pekanbaru to Muaro, Indonesia. My father was Dutch but by the time the Second World War started my father lived and worked (he was a doctor) in Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony. Japan invaded and captured Indonesia in 1942 and three years of terro followed. After Japan capitulated and the enemy was about to leave, my father fled and managed to grab a photo camera that had belonged to a Japanes camp officer. This was one of the first Mamiya’s, a Japanese brand founded in 1940. So, in a way this image is a symbol of my father’s regained freedom.
