Who Would Have Thought

I saw an item on the news about the situation in New York City. Now the epicenter of the Corona pandemic in the West. Deserted cityscape and about to shut down and black out, likely to result in a human disaster. I visited recently and there was no sign this was coming, was there? I browsed through my photos.

Today I went out into the heart of town, the old streets around the Dam Square. Normally packed with tourists, now not a soul in sight. A cold wind was blowing and it felt eery. We met very few people: A group of food couriers outside McDonalds, a souvenir shop owner on his doorstep, a lady on a bike, a car, a motorcycle, a family group of 4, an English speaking couple and a boy opening up a delivery truck in front of The Bulldog. About sixteen people in a two hours walk. Amsterdam on the weekend.

A song came to mind.

2020 – In the song ‘2020’ by George Benson it goes “… if I knew back then what I know now…”.  People throwing out their shoes in 2019 didn’t see it coming…. or did they?
